Alison Grimm

Artist Statement:

Alison Grimm (b. 1983 Detroit, Michigan) is an artist living and working in the Seattle area. She received her BA in Sculpture from University of Puget Sound in 2012, followed by an MFA in Sculpture at Wayne State University in Detroit and additional MA in American Cultural Studies from Ludwig Maximilian’s University-Munich in 2020. Grimm works in a variety of media, including drawing, collage, wood and metal fabrication, and ceramic. This body of work represents digital renderings of the artist’s large-scale drawing and collages made in 2019 while studying abroad. Here, Grimm’s work explores archetypal human experiences, abstracted through architectural symbolism and a sci-fi lens. “I enjoy bringing the viewer into unusual visual scenes where they can experience a space and its symbolism while furthering the narrative through their own imaginations. I’m playfully drawn to both constructed and natural environments, and the blending of those in order to touch upon the emotional depths and unknowns that make up a large part of our human experience”. Adding to these digital renderings, Grimm has included alternate versions of each collage presented as “scrambled” versions, as well as a handful of new handcrafted collage works.
